Try and Imagine and Mr. Drifter present: Running in Circles [TUG052]

"I started this track early last year during a weird time in my life. My grandfather had just passed away, coupled with other writers block, sleeping through days, staying up all night, and just a general lack of satisfaction from life. Due to my writers block and not feeling satisfied with the music I was making, I decided to make this entire song (besides the drums) out of just simple sine and square waves, with relatively short fx chains. I didn’t want to be distracted by crazy complex sounds or trying to fit in to any box, I just wanted to convey my emotion through sound, with nothing else in mind. Before the instrumental was even finished (which I believe for the instrumental was just a single session or two) I already knew I wanted to send it to my good friend Dre (mr. drifter) to add vocals. His voice and lyrics always have such an astounding ability to convey the deepest of human emotions, which I felt he did incredibly well on this track. At times I feel like the song almost feels broken, like the pieces are hardly being held together, the drums are loose and all over the place, the melodies have weird phase issues, but that’s what makes the song so beautiful to me. I was heavily inspired before writing this tune listening to “SEVDALIZA - MARILYN MONROE, specifically the vocal processing and vibe, as well as “Borgore - someone else’s”, and “5 years”, specifically the melodies all being made out of simple sine and square waves, and still compelling deep emotion, and finally by Flume’s debut album, specifically the compositional style of a lot of the tracks on the album. And thus this track was born!"
